Marko explains why Perez is much slower than Verstappen in same car

Helmut Marko has offered an explanation for why Sergio Perez has been much slower than Max Verstappen in the same Formula 1 car.

Verstappen enjoyed another dominant weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix, with the Dutchman extending his lead in the World Championship to 69 points after claiming his sixth win of the season.

The victory was also Red Bull's 100th in F1, a milestone that team advisor Marko relished celebrating.

"When something like that happens, you don't run away straight away," Marko told Austrian outlet OE24.

"Then you show up in Red Bull clothes as well. But I changed immediately and then slept wonderfully on the plane.

"100 victories are a wonderful sleeping pill."

Perez's struggles

The weekend in Montreal was not quite as successful for Verstappen's teammate Perez.

After being eliminated in Q2 of Saturday's qualifying, the Mexican started the race from P12 and ultimately finished in sixth.

When asked why Perez looks to be much slower than Verstappen in the same RB19, Marko gave a simple answer.

"Because Max is Max," the Austrian said.

"He's in the best car, but even in that car only [Fernando] Alonso and [Lewis] Hamilton could keep up.

"Those three are simply the strongest, and Max stands out among them."
