Lewis Hamilton News

Despite the fact that Hamilton's Mercedes couldn't usually match the pace of Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren, the Brit enjoyed a solid season with two victories. He won his home race, the British Grand Prix. Earlier in the 2024 season, it was announced that the Brit would be moving to Ferrari, and expectations are high that he will claim his eighth world championship with this iconic Italian team.

Hamilton F1

Born in Stevenage, Hamilton began his career karting and, after winning his first title at the age of 10, told McLaren boss Ron Dennis he wanted to drive his cars in F1 one day. In response, Dennis famously wrote in Hamilton's autograph book: "Phone me in nine years and we'll sort something out". Just three years later, it was Dennis who offered Hamilton a role in the McLaren Driver Development Programme, with the contract including an option on a future F1 seat.

In 2001, Hamilton began racing single-seaters in the Formula Renault Winter Series, before competing in a full Formula Renault UK campaign in 2002. After clinching that title in 2003, he spent two full seasons in the Formula 3 Euro Series, finishing fifth in 2004 before winning 15 of 20 races en route to a dominant championship victory in 2005. More success would follow, as Hamilton rounded off his junior racing career with the GP2 title in 2006.

Lewis Hamilton for McLaren

After months of speculation, McLaren finally announced Hamilton as Fernando Alonso's teammate for the 2007 season. The Briton impressed immediately, beginning his F1 career with nine consecutive podium finishes which included wins in Canada and America. For large parts of the season, Hamilton looked destined to win the Drivers' Championship in his rookie campaign, but would agonisingly miss out by a point to Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.

In similarly dramatic fashion, Hamilton made amends the following year, winning the 2008 title thanks to a late move on Timo Glock at the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix. However, in the years that followed with the Woking-based outfit, frustration began to fester as one thing or another dashed Hamilton's hopes of adding to his haul of titles. This led the Briton to leave for Mercedes in 2013, in a move that shocked the paddock.

Hamilton equals Schumacher with records

It proved to be an astute decision, however, as Hamilton has gone on to become the most decorated driver in Formula 1 history, equalling Michael Schumacher's seven world titles and eclipsing his record of race wins, poles and podium finishes.

Only three times has Hamilton been beaten in his Mercedes career. This happened in 2016, when teammate Nico Rosberg prevailed by five points before announcing his shock retirement at the end of the year. Then, in 2021, Max Verstappen took the title by overtaking Hamilton on the last lap of the controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Tough seasons with Mercedes

In 2022, Hamilton experienced what was statistically his worst season in Formula 1, with both the Briton and new teammate George Russell unable to challenge their rivals due to issues with the W13 car. While Verstappen took his second championship, Hamilton finished the year down in sixth in the standings.

In 2023, Hamilton and Russell continued to race for Mercedes. Their aim was to challenge the dominant Red Bull team and contend for the world championship. However, it quickly became apparent that Red Bull was too strong, and Mercedes found itself battling Ferrari for second place. In the end, Mercedes emerged victorious in this battle. Lewis Hamilton scored 234 points this season, compared to his teammate's 175.

In 2024, Mercedes was once again unable to challenge for the world championship. Nevertheless, both drivers achieved several victories, and Lewis Hamilton ultimately scored 223 points.

Lewis Hamilton is making a sensational move to Ferrari

At the beginning of 2024, it was announced that Lewis Hamilton would be making a sensational move to Ferrari. Partnering with Charles Leclerc, the Brit will be aiming for his eighth world championship with this iconic Italian team in 2025.
