Who is Dr Helmut Marko?

Helmut Marko was born on 27 April 1943 in the Austrian city of Graz. At a young age, he was introduced to racing. Marko grew up with Karl Jochen Rindt, the 1970 Formula 1 world champion. Where his friend found his happiness in the pinnacle of motorsport, Marko found it in endurance racing. This included winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1971. This he did together with Dutchman Gijs van Lennep. He also competed in ten Formula 1 Grands Prix. However, success failed to materialise: Marko did not manage to score points in any of these races.

The eye of Helmut Marko

During the 1972 French Formula 1 Grand Prix, Dr Helmut Marko's racing career came to an abrupt end. Fellow driver Ronnie Peterson drove over a stone in his March, which came up and pierced Marko's visor. This led to Marko becoming permanently blind in his left eye. Within the motorsport world, people often cynically refer to it as "Dr Marko's eye", as many say the Austrian has a 'good eye for talent'. This is because Marko is responsible for contracting a large proportion of (successful) drivers who are/were part of the Red Bull Junior Team.

After his accident, Dr Helmut Marko remained involved within racing. For a time, for instance, he was manager of Austrian drivers Gerhard Berger and Karl Wendlinger. in 1989, he founded his own racing team: RSM Marko. The team competed in Formula 3 and Formula 3000. In 1999, RSM Marko was renamed the Red Bull Junior Team. Dr Marko has since been leader of the team and responsible for noticing and capturing talented drivers. Several household names such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr. owe much of their careers to the Austrian. Marko has been an advisor at Red Bull Racing's Formula 1 team, the parent company of the Red Bull Junior Team, since 2005. He also fulfils this role at Scuderia AlphaTauri (since 2006). In 2021, Dr Helmut Marko arranged for Nyck de Vries to join AlphaTauri.

Dr Helmut Marko: never mincing words

Marko is known for expressing his opinions - openly. In addition, he finds it far from difficult to cut knots within a team. During the periods when Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon were teammates of Max Verstappen, he was not averse to publicly criticising the Red Bull protégés. Former Red Bull and AlphaTauri driver Daniil Kvyat also got to know the Austrian's business side on several occasions. In an episode of Formula One podcast Beyond The Grid, the Russian said the following: "Even when I was 15 years old, he [Marko] called regularly. He would say, "If you don't perform, you're out." That did not refer to the next season, but to the next race. It made quite an impact. However, he knew how to get the message across, which ultimately made me stronger."
