Steeped in history and tradition, Formula 1 is the highest class of auto racing for single-seater cars around the world.

While the series has roots in events dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, the first F1 race was the 1946 Turin Grand Prix. However, the World Drivers' Championship wasn't ratified until 1947, with the first World Championship event taking place at Silverstone in 1950.

Giuseppe Farina won the first championship, but the early days of the sport are synonymous with Juan Manuel Fangio, who won five titles in the 1950s.

Stirling Moss' success, despite never claiming the top prize, also ushered in a period of British dominance, with the likes of Mike Hawthorn, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, John Surtees and Graham Hill all winning championships from 1958 to 1974.

The 1970s saw the sport's popularity take off with teams such as Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and drivers like Emerson Fittipaldi, Niki Lauda, James Hunt and Mario Andretti elevating the sport to heights not seen before.

Technological advancements like active suspension, semi-automatic gearboxes and traction control took off in the 1980s, though the dangers of the sport never diminished, as shown by names like Gilles Villeneuve, Elio de Angelis, Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna all passing away after accidents on the track.

Senna's rivalry with Alain Prost in the late 80s to early 90s galvanized the sport, while stars like Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton have helped F1 become the global powerhouse it is today.

In 2023, Max Verstappen will be looking to retain his title after a crushing display in last season's championship battle.
