Ralf Schumacher has listed a potential candidate for the remaining Formula 1 seat vacancy at Williams.
The Grove-based squad is the only team yet to confirm its complete line-up for next season, with only Alexander Albon tied to a deal.
Logan Sargeant currently occupies the other drive but has endured a challenging rookie season that has left his future up in the air.
Williams Team Principal James Vowles has asserted that he is waiting until after the end of the season to make a decision over the second seat.
However, according to ex-F1 driver Schumacher, another candidate has emerged in the form of Mercedes junior Frederik Vesti.
"In Las Vegas, I wondered why team boss James Vowles had not yet confirmed Sargeant at Williams," Schumacher told Sky Sports Germany.
"That probably has to do with the fact that Frederik Vesti is on the wish list.
“They are watching him closely in Abu Dhabi and they may also see his data to possibly make a decision for next year.
Vesti has taken part in two FP1 sessions with Mercedes this season, including at this weekend's round in Abu Dhabi.
The Danish driver is contending for the Formula 2 title in Abu Dhabi, having won five races so far this year.
