Vasseur denies botched upgrade will cost Ferrari F1 title

Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur has denied claims the Scuderia's botched Spanish Grand Prix upgrade will cost it the constructors' championship.

With just two rounds to go in 2024, Ferrari sits 24 points behind McLaren as it chases its first F1 title since the 2008 constructors', with McLaren fighting for its first since 1998. 

Neither team have won a title since they split the 2008 crowns with Lewis Hamilton snatching the drivers' for McLaren. 

Red Bull is also in the mix, but is some 53 points behind McLaren with 103 left on the board across the Qatar-Abu Dhabi double-header.

Ferrari enjoyed a strong start to the season and has come on strong in recent races, but its mid-season form after a one-three in Monaco collapsed, which included three point-less races in four for Charles Leclerc between Canada and Britain.

An upgrade in Spanish re-introduced porpoising to the car, which coincided with the drop in form, but Vasseur is sure that this upgrade won't be the sole reason behind Ferrari not winning the title.

"This is an easy one, that it is always easy at the end of the season to say without the crash in Singapore [for Carlos Sainz in qualifying], or without this or without that, we would have been champion," he told media including RacingNews365.

"I think this is true for McLaren, they've also had some issues, it is true for everybody on the grid, we have all missed opportunities.

"Part of the business is not only to have the best car, but also to score the maximum number of points we can score over the season. 

"It is true that Baku was not the best one, nor was Singapore, and we struggled in terms of pure performance in Spain, the UK and Austria, but the reaction was good because after three races, we were back on the pace at Spa, but it is true that in terms of pure performance, this was the weak point."
