Max Verstappen will start a wretched 17th for the São Paulo Grand Prix after being caught out by one of the many red flags during a chaotic qualifying session at Interlagos.

Safely through into Q2 after topping the timesheet in Q1, as track conditions ramped up over the 15 minutes, as the clock ticked down, Lance Stroll binned his Aston Martin out of the Senna S in the first sector.

At that stage, with Verstappen building up to his final hot lap, race control opted to red-flag the session, leaving Verstappen and Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez in the drop zone, and with no time to restart.

With a five-place grid penalty for taking on an extra internal combustion engine beyond the pool, lying 12th on the timesheet, it means the three-time F1 champion will start 17th. Perez will move up one place to 12th.

F1 title rival Lando Norris, meanwhile, who only scraped out of Q1, was quickest in Q2 when the session was halted.
