Petronas has issued a statement rebutting the suggestion of a possible return of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Reuters claimed on Wednesday 31st January that the Mercedes title-sponsor was in talks to engineer a return to the Sepang International Circuit, which last held a Grand Prix in 2017.

The popular race was discontinued after a decline in ticket sales and race hosting fees, but the track is still host to MotoGP - among other championships.

Responding to the reports of a potential return, Petronas issued a statement, flatly denying the suggestion of F1 returning to Sepang.

"Petronas refers to the news reports published on 31 January 2024 on the potential return of the Formula One Grand Prix to Sepang, Malaysia, in 2026," began the statement.

"We would like to confirm that there have been no discussions on bringing the sport back to the Petronas Sepang International Circuit."
