Norris critical of rivals' behaviour before Mexico charge

Lando Norris believes he was lucky to avoid an "extremely big crash" on the red-flag restart half-way through the Mexico City Grand Prix.

On Lap 33 of 71, Kevin Magnussen crashed heavily at Turn 9 after suspension failure, with barrier repairs needed causing the race to be red-flagged, with Norris in 10th, having climbed from 17th on the grid and an early pit-stop for Hards having started on the Softs.

However, a poor launch meant he lost five places as he was dwarfed by those cars behind - although he soon settled down and launched a charge up to fifth place, including barging passes on Daniel Ricciardo and George Russell into the Turn 4/5/6 complex.

Despite the recovery charge, Norris was critical of some of his rivals in the second start stampede to Turn 1.

Norris: I couldn't push as much as I wanted to

"I had to avoid a very big crash because people were coming across and not realising they can be three-abreast," Norris told media, including RacingNews365.

"I avoided two extremely big crashes, one would have been very nasty.

"I think more self-awareness in some drivers would be great. That's not why I lost out, I lost out because of a bad start."

Discussing his late charge, Norris felt that he was hamstrung by the cooling demands Mexico City places on teams.

"When I came over the line for the first time, I got told to cool the engine, so I couldn't maybe push as much as I wanted to at times," he said.

"But in then the times I could, which was a lot of the second stint, I would have better pace in almost everyone apart from Hamilton and that was very encouraging for us."
