Magnussen explains why he had a hammer in his Haas during testing

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen has revealed why he was pictured with a hammer in the cockpit during the final day of F1 pre-season testing.

The peculiar moment came during the Dane's final session in the new VF-24 before returning to the Bahrain International Circuit next week for the first race of the new season.

Explaining why he had a hammer, Magnussen said: "[I was] just adjusting the seat.

"We were doing a scan of the seat I was running last year and will also be running this year, so you bring out like a version of that seat but it is never 100 per cent correct.

"So there were a few adjustments to be made."

'Good impressions of the car'

Haas finished bottom of the Constructors' standings last year after Magnussen and teammate Nico Hulkenberg were handicapped by excessive rear tyre wear during races, leaving them powerless to defend from rivals late in stints and often being forced into extra pit stops.

Despite the team having completed more laps than any other during the three-day test, Magnussen conceded: "You never get all the answers you need, you always want more time.

"Three days of testing and splitting those three days between the drivers is really limiting.

"I think given the limited time, we did a lot and we got some good impressions of the car. The focus is trying to be good on Sundays, we did a lot of high-fuel race running to try and address that issue and I think we got somewhere.

"We haven't fixed the issue completely but I do think we have made progress and hopefully it is enough to make a difference next week."
