Alex Albon has stated it is “odd” that Kevin Magnussen's penalty point tally reset after he served his race ban in Azerbaijan.

Since the 2014 campaign, any driver that is issued 12 penalty points within 12 months is issued an automatic race ban for the next applicable grand prix.

Magnussen reached the mark last time out in Italy and has been ruled out of the weekend in Baku, with Oliver Bearman taking his place.

Albon stated that drivers are not a fan of the penalty point system as he questioned the fairness in having a clean slate after the ban is served.

“I don't think anyone's a real fan of it,” Albon told media including RacingNews365. “I think the punishment in the race itself should be what's done.

“If I look back at the instances that Kevin rated in a couple of races, those races, he should have been penalised much more than he was.

“That set a precedent, and then he kept repeating them and then it's got a little bit messy.

“There's been a couple where they've been actually dangerous, but a lot of them have not been.

“It seems a little bit odd. It even seems odd that it resets straight after your one-race ban and then you're back on a clean slate again.”
