Lando Norris was left ruing a "little mistake" in Q3 that cost him a chance at earning pole on a historic day at the British Grand Prix.

Mercedes pair George Russell and Lewis Hamilton will share the front-row, with Norris slotting in behind to make it three British drivers in the top three places on the grid for the first time since the 1968 South African Grand Prix.

After the first Q3 runs, Norris found himself in second place, just 0.006s down on provisional pole-sitter Russell, with Hamilton third, but the seven-time Silverstone pole-sitter leap-frogged the McLaren after Norris was forced to abort his lap.

A minor mistake at Turn 3 was to blame, but Norris is still confident of taking the fight to his countrymen.

"I am happy with P3, with three Brits in the top three, it is pretty cool," Norris explained.

"They were good laps by George and by Lewis, they did an excellent job and a little mistake on my part in the end, but P3 is still good."

Three-way British fight

Russell became the ninth British driver to earn pole position for the British GP, and the first other than Hamilton since Damon Hill for Williams in 1996 as Mercedes took its 84th front-row lock-out to take the all-time record it shared with Ferrari.

Despite starting behind Russell and Hamilton, Norris is still confident that he can take the fight to the Silver Arrows, especially if rain falls.

"I just want it to rain again [in the race], so I am excited, it is going to be a good race," he added.

"We were quick, I can bring the fight to George and I can bring the fight to Lewis, so am excited to put on a good show.

'We're going to have some good battles, so I'm looking forward to it."
