Why Monaco is set to showcase F1 is the problem

Monaco is set to showcase that Formula 1 is to blame for boring races, rather than the legendary Circuit de Monaco.

Several drivers insisted after the recent Monaco Grand Prix that changes need to be made to make the race more exciting, following just four overtakes across the 78-lap race. 

Following previous discussions, there is little Monaco can do to its layout. Following an announcement this week, however, it is set to be shown that F1 is the issue. 

Following approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council on Tuesday, the 2024/25 Formula E calendar was announced, with a staggering addition being a double-header in Monaco for the first time. 

Formula E has used the traditional Circuit de Monaco layout since 2021, with this season's race featuring a staggering 197 overtakes. Last year's race also produced an impressive 116 moves. 

With two Formula E races set to take place in Monaco on the same weekend in 2025, there is a realistic possibility that over 300 overtakes will be completed at the circuit. 

Motorsport history

Of course, Formula E cars are smaller, have less power and use specially designed road-legal Hankook tyres. However, next season's Monaco E-Prix will feature the new Gen3.5 car, which is the fastest accelerating FIA single-seater. 

Regardless of the differences between the cars, both championships use the same circuit. With that and the number of overtakes in mind, it is clear the current F1 cars are to blame for disappointing races in Monaco. 

Next year's two Formula E races in the Principality will just further showcase that. It will be another historic moment for Formula E, as it will be the first time Monaco has ever held the same category back-to-back on a weekend.

"The other double-header is in Monaco," Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds told select media including RacingNews365. "And again, I think it's really interesting, lots of talk after the Formula 1 race in Monaco about whether after 95 years that circuit is still suitable as a motor racing circuit. 

"We, as you know, delivered 200 or over 200 overtakes on the Monaco circuit in the Formula E race this year. 

"So I think to be granted the opportunity to go there and do back-to-back races for the first time in motorsport history in Monaco is, again, a lovely moment for us as a championship."
