Sebastien Buemi hints at agreed Envision Formula E contract extension

Sebastien Buemi hinted that a new deal had been agreed to remain in Formula E with Envision next season. 

Prior to the new 2026 Formula E and World Endurance Championship calendars being released, there had been some speculation that the Season 2 champion could depart the series. 

However, with no race clashes next year and a return to good form – Buemi was victorious in Monaco and secured a podium in Jakarta – he is set to remain in the all-electric series for a 12th season. 

When asked by RacingNews365 if he will be on the grid next season, Buemi answered: "Yes. Yeah, I would say so, yeah. 

Discussing if contract talks with Envision had been positive, Buemi added: "Yeah, it's obviously good because of, like I said, the [FE and WEC] calendars, because with clashes, it would have been very difficult to find a solution."

Multi-year contract problem

Despite a disappointing Berlin E-Prix, Buemi is enjoying his second-best campaign in the last five seasons of FE. 

With an eye on the future of the category, the Swiss driver has already outlined his interest in the Season 13 arrival of Gen4, a car which has already reached 210 mph in private testing.

However, negotiating a multi-year contract with Envision to secure him a seat on the grid for Gen4 is unrealistic. 

Buemi outlined that he cannot commit to a long-term deal due to not knowing the FE and WEC calendars for 2027, unless exit clauses are included. 

"Again, the problem is the calendars, and that the calendars you only get to know them quite late, obviously in May or June of the following year," explained the 36-year-old.

"So, you know, there can be a [multi-year] contract in place, but then there might be an exit clause, or we'll have to see. 

"Because obviously, I understand both championships, you have a team, you don't want to have a driver that is not going to come to all the races. 

"So at some point, we do not get, like, a formal word from the FIA that they will not have clashes. So because of that, you always have to go year by year [contracts], somehow."
