Will Jack Doohan & Pierre Gasly be able bring the French Formula 1 team to bigger heights in 2025? The team performed well last year, but has the ambition to make the step towards the top teams.

Renault rebranded as Alpine in 2021

Looking to promote the French manufacturer's sports car brand, Renault rebranded as the Alpine F1 team for 2021. With McLaren switching to Mercedes engines last year, Renault are now the only power unit manufacturer without a customer beyond their works operation.

History of Alpine in F1

This is not Alpine's first foray into Formula 1, with the brand having previously tried to enter into the 1968 French Grand Prix. While that project would ultimately fail, Renault went on to enter the sport as a constructor in 1977. Unfortunately they earned a reputation for a lack of reliability early on, but later produced a car capable of winning races and challenging for titles in the early 1980s.

However, Renault decided to withdraw after the 1985 season, instead opting to focus on the supply of their engines. Between 1992 and 1997, the team successfully partnered with Williams and then Benetton, helping the likes of Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve to win world titles

The French manufacturer would eventually re-join the grid as a works outfit in 2002, with Alonso securing back-to-back Drivers' Championships in 2005 and 2006 to put an end to Ferrari's dominance of the period. However, the team were not able to maintain that level of performance, and became embroiled in controversy when it was revealed that they had instructed Nelson Piquet Jr to crash on purpose at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, in order to help Alonso win the race. Renault eventually admitted wrongdoing in the saga that would later become known as 'Crashgate'

In 2011, Renault took a step back from Formula 1 by becoming only an engine supplier, and the squad was renamed the Lotus F1 Team. The Renault name then returned as a team in 2016. One of their strongest years came in 2018, where Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz helped the outfit to finish fourth in the Constructors' Championship.
 

Daniel Ricciardo joined from Red Bull in 2019, and was partnered by Hulkenberg before the German was replaced by Ocon for 2020. After a difficult 2019, 2020 saw the team secure their first podium results since returning to the sport in 2016, with Ricciardo finishing third at the Eifel and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix. Ocon also took his first podium, with a second place at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

First F1 victory for Ocon

After Ricciardo left to join McLaren for 2021, Alonso made his comeback to Formula 1 with Alpine following a two-year hiatus, whilst Ocon remained with the team. The French outfit continued to show improvement in 2021, and Ocon clinched a surprise debut F1 victory at the chaotic Hungarian Grand Prix. There was also a long-awaited podium for Alonso at the Qatar Grand Prix, his first top-three finish since 2014. The squad finished the campaign in fifth place in the Constructors' Championship.

The 2023 and 2024 season for Alpine F1

In 2023, Ocon gained a new teammate in the form of Pierre Gasly, after Alonso made a rather unexpected move to Aston Martin. The French team finished a lonely sixth in the midfield. Both drivers made it to the podium once.

The 2024 season got off to a very poor start in Bahrain with a seventeenth and eighteenth place. As a result, the French team was under a lot of pressure for a long time and the car's performance seemed to have declined. In addition, incidents caused tensions between Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon and the team. This didn't make the situation any easier. However, the team grew as the season progressed and a double podium was achieved in Brazil with second and third place. Ultimately, this allowed Alpine to fight its way back to sixth place in the championship, a remarkable achievement given the difficult start to the season.

At the end of the season, it was announced that Esteban Ocon would be leaving the team and moving to Haas for the following season. This allowed Alpine junior Jack Doohan to drive the final race of the season and he will partner Pierre Gasly as a full-time driver for the French team in 2025. However, the Australian rookie was replaced by Franco Colapinto after just six races.

In 2025, the team hopes to take a step towards the top. Will they succeed with this new driver duo of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto?
