Nico Hulkenberg F1 News

Nico Hülkenberg returned to Formula 1 in 2024 as a driver for Haas, alongside Kevin Magnussen. He had a strong season, scoring 41 points for the American team. Together with Magnussen's 16 points, the team finished seventh in the Constructors' Championship.

In 2025, Hülkenberg will race for Stake F1 Team, which will become Audi from 2026. He will be partnered with rookie driver Gabriel Bortoleto.

Nico Hulkenberg early years

Born in West Germany, Hulkenberg made his karting debut in 1997 at the age of 10 and won several titles before graduating into Formula BMW in 2005. There, he won the championship comfortably, securing eight race victories and a total of 14 podiums from 20 races.

Hulkenberg would then progress into the German Formula 3 Championship where he finished fifth before adding further titles in the A1 Grand Prix, the Masters of Formula 3, the Formula 3 Euro series, and GP2 on his path to F1. The German first drove an F1 car in a 2007 test for Williams and was subsequently signed as a test driver and reserve driver.

Nico Hulkenberg F1

In 2009 it was announced Hulkenberg would make his F1 debut for Williams in 2010 alongside the experienced Rubens Barrichello. In his first season, the German scored 22 points and secured the team’s first pole position in five years at the rain-affected Brazilian Grand Prix. Nevertheless, this wasn’t enough and he was dropped after just one season.

It wasn’t the end though, as Hulkenberg returned in 2012 to enjoy eight years in F1 that included two stints at Force India, a year with Sauber, three seasons with Renault, and three super-sub appearances in 2020. A career-high of seventh in the drivers’ championship was secured in 2018, but the podium famously eluded the likeable German who holds the record for the most starts (179) without achieving the feat.

Victory at 24 hours of Le Mans

There’s more to motorsport than just F1 though, and in 2016, Hulkenberg claimed victory in one of the most famous sporting events in the world – the 24 hours of Le Mans race.

The German was ousted from Renault in favour of Esteban Ocon but would race in 2020, filling in twice for Sergio Perez and once for Lance Stroll after both Racing Point drivers contracted COVID-19 during the season.

At the start of the 2022 F1 season Hulkenberg returned at Aston Martin after Vettel contract COVID-19 and had to sit out two races. His fellow countryman impressed, but after two races disappeared again from the grid.

Nico Hulkenberg Haas

At the end of the year, Haas signed Hulkenberg for a fulltime 2023 F1 drive, as he replaces Mick Schumacher, who was axed after a disappointing season. He scored 9 points for the team and will represent Haas F1 Team once again in the 2024 season.
