Emerson Fittipaldi, born on December 12, 1946 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was named after American writer Ralf Waldo Emerson. He made his F1 debut towards the end of 1970 at the British Grand Prix where he finished eighth. That year’s Italian Grand Prix would change everything for the young Brazilian as team leader, and eventual champion, Jochen Rindt would be killed in a practice accident. Fittipaldi won the penultimate round in the United States later that season, ensuring that his former Austrian teammate would end the season as F1’s first and only posthumous champion.

Emerson would have a tough 1971 season, but he bounced back in 1972 with five wins and beat Sir Jackie Stewart to the title. Ronnie Peterson joined him and proved to be tough competition, out qualifying and winning more races than the Brazilian. With McLaren establishing themselves as the favourites for the 1974 season, Emerson joined them on a two-year deal.

The move worked out as Emerson would win his second championship in three years, beating out Swiss driver Clay Regazzoni to the title by three points. Emerson would spend one more season with McLaren, finishing the 1975 championship in second behind Ferrari’s Niki Lauda.

Emerson left McLaren and joined his brother Wilson as they ran an all-Brazilian team funded by the Brazil-based sugar company, Copersucar. The move didn’t pay off and the team struggled before eventually folding in 1982. Although Fittipaldi would leave F1, he found success in America winning the CART championship in 1989 and the Indianapolis 500 on two occasions.
