Formula E is the pinnacle of electric open-wheel motorsport, conceived as a new series sanctioned by the FIA in 2011. The inaugural championship took place in 2014 with the first race at the Beijing Olympic Park.

The world's premier electric race series was born from the changing focus of the automotive industry towards electrically powered vehicles, and has evolved through a range of cars and new racing formats throughout its short history.

Originally conceived as an idea between FIA President Jean Todt and Formula E Chairman Alejandro Agag, the series looks to showcase the potential of sustainable mobility and electric vehicles.

The current, and third, generation of the Formula E car is the Spark Gen3, a standardised vehicle raced by all teams in the competition that contains a 51kWh battery, power output of between 300kW to 350kW and a top speed of up to 322 km/h (200 mph).

Formula E races are held exclusively on adapted street circuits of between 1.9 to 3.4 km in length, and a variety of manufacturers, ranging from Citroen's DS brand to Porsche, Jaguar and others, have competed in the series.

The competition is currently contested by a total of 11 teams each fielding two drivers and the race itself runs in a timed format of 45 minutes plus one lap. For the 2019 season the series was granted FIA World Championship status.

In addition to standard points scoring, Formula E has an in-race requirement called Attack Mode, in which drivers gain 50kW of power by driving off the racing line and through a designated area. This must be used twice per race.

Among the manufacturers, Renault is the most successful to have completed in the series, securing three Constructors' Championship wins in 2014, 2015 and 2017, followed by DS Automobiles with two titles and Abt Schaeffler with one.

Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne is the only driver to have won two championships with DS Techeetah, while Stoffel Vandoorne, Nyck de Vries, Antonio Felix da Costa, Lucas di Grassi, Sebastian Buemi and Nelson Piquet Jr have taken home championship victories. Jake Dennis won the 2023 drivers' championship, whilst Envision won the teams' title. 

For 2024, Formula E will stage 16 rounds, with the season kicking off in Mexico in January and concluding in the United Kingdom in July. In between, there will be visits to Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Japan, Italy, Monaco, Germany, China, the United States and the United Kingdom.
