Yuki Tsunoda F1 news

The 2025 Formula 1 season marks the fifth season for Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda, but this year he will race for the main Red Bull team for the first time. After a strong 2024 season with 30 points, it seemed like an exciting battle between Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda for the available Red Bull seat, following Sergio Pérez’s departure from Red Bull. Unfortunately for the Japanese driver, Lawson was given the preference, and Tsunoda will again race for Red Bull’s sister team in 2025. However, after two races, Tsunoda swapped places with Lawson.

Yuki Tsunoda's rapid rise through motorsport saw him make his Formula 1 debut in 2021. Having won the F4 Japanese Championship with Honda in 2018, Tsunoda joined the Red Bull Junior Team when the Red Bull-Honda alliance was finalised in 2019. 
 

In the same year, he raced in the Formula 3 Championship, where he secured three podiums and a win en route to a ninth-place finish in the final standings.

Tsunoda F2

From there, Tsunoda progressed into F2 in 2020, where he raced for Carlin. During the season, he scored 200 points - including three wins and seven podiums in total - which was good enough to finish third in the championship and secure the super license points required to enter F1. 
 

Yuki Tsunoda for AlphaTauri and Visa Cash App RB

Speculation was rife that he would replace Daniil Kvyat at AlphaTauri, and it was eventually confirmed by Red Bull, who rated the Japanese driver very highly. He made his debut for AlphaTauri and drove alongside Pierre Gasly as his teammate.

In particular, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has stated his admiration for Tsunoda's driving style and all-round ability behind the wheel. However, Tsunoda's rookie campaign was not all smooth sailing, with several crashes and radio outbursts taking place.

The Japanese driver seemed to find more consistency as the year went on, but expressed surprise at AlphaTauri's decision to re-sign him for 2022. In his second year on the grid Tsunonda achieved a best finish of P7 at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, finishing the season in 17th overall in the Drivers' Standings. 
 

Tsunoda will be partnered with Formula E World Champion Nyck de Vries in 2023, as he looks to improve his results and finish more regularly in the midfield.

However, halfway through the season de Vries got replaced by Daniel Ricciardo. In 2024 the duo will drive once again for the Italian team, but then with the name 'Visa Cash App RB' because of the name change. After the Singapore Grand Prix in 2024, Liam Lawson took over Daniel Ricciardo's spot, making him teammates again with the Japanese driver.

In 2025, Tsunoda was swapped with Liam Lawson after two races and is now a full-time driver for the Red Bull team this year.
