Jos Verstappen, born on March 4, 1972 in Montfort, Netherlands, is a former Formula 1 driver and a well-known name in the world of motorsports. With his impressive racing career and remarkable performances at the highest level of motorsports, Jos Verstappen has made his mark on Dutch and international motorsports history.

Jos Verstappen: early career and breakthrough

Jos Verstappen made his debut in motorsports in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He started his career in karting and quickly moved up to the automotive classes. His talent and speed stood out, and he won several championships in the Netherlands and Europe. In 1991, he made the switch to Formula Opel Lotus and won the championship in his debut season. He also won the Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 at the Zandvoort circuit in 1993. This led to his breakthrough in the world of motorsports, and he got the opportunity to test for Formula 1 teams.

Jos Verstappen's Formula 1 debut

In 1994, Jos Verstappen made his Formula 1 debut with the Benetton Formula team as a test driver. He made his racing debut later that year, during the Brazilian Grand Prix. As a teammate of Michael Schumacher and with limited preparation, he had a challenging year. The Benetton car was difficult to drive, and Verstappen was (over)enthusiastic. The combination did not result in the desired results, but rather in several spins and crashes.

Jos Verstappen's fire incident: Germany 1994

The world was shocked by a large fire in the pit lane during the 1994 German Grand Prix. At the Hockenheim circuit, the Benetton team had removed a filter from the fuel rig, and Jos Verstappen's car caught fire. Two weeks later, his hard work and learning paid off with a third-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He achieved the same result in Belgium.

Verstappen at Simtek and Footwork

After one season with Benetton, Jos was transferred to the backmarker team of Simtek. Verstappen showed his talent on several occasions, but Simtek's bankruptcy meant that 'Jos the Boss' had to sit out the rest of the season after five rounds of the championship.

In 1996, he joined the Footwork team. Verstappen scored points once that season, during the Argentine Grand Prix. He finished sixth in Buenos Aires.

Verstappen in the 2000s: Honda, Arrows, and Minardi

Midway through the season, he was called upon to replace Jan Magnussen at Stewart, but it was not a success. For 1999, Verstappen was contracted by the new Honda team, which intended to enter F1 in 2000. Despite good test results, Honda pulled the plug on the project, resulting in a missed opportunity for the Dutchman.

In 2000, we saw Jos back in F1 with the Arrows team. There, he showed that he had grown as a driver. Thanks to a fast and aggressive driving style, there was always something happening around the Dutchman. In 2001, Jos started his first full season with the same team.

Just before the start of the 2002 season, Jos Verstappen was sidelined by Arrows, despite having a signed contract. The comeback kid made one last return to Formula 1. In 2003, he drove for the Italian team of Minardi.

Jos Verstappen after Formula 1

After his time at Minardi, Jos hung up his Formula 1 helmet. However, he remained active in motorsport, albeit at different levels. He participated in various other racing classes, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the A1 Grand Prix, where he was successful and could further showcase his skills as a driver. Although he only competed in one season of the A1 Grand Prix, Verstappen regularly scored points. He won the race in South Africa and also sprayed champagne in Mexico, where he secured a second place for Team Netherlands.

After his own career, Jos put everything aside to prepare his son, Max Verstappen, for Formula 1. And it certainly paid off, as Max won his first Formula 1 race at the age of 18. In 2021 and 2022, Max became the Formula 1 world champion.
