Born in Balcarce, Argentina, Juan Manuel Fangio would move to Europe in 1948. The Argentine would compete in F1’s first ever season in 1950 for the Alfa Romeo team alongside Giuseppe Farina, recording three wins while retiring from three other races. He finished second overall in the championship, behind his teammate Farina.

Fangio would improve on his previous season in 1951, winning three more races and finishing second on two occasions. Those results would help him beat Ferrari’s Alberto Ascari to the title, the first of his five. The Argentine didn’t take part in the 1952 campaign, though he would compete in several non-championship events.

He returned for the 1953 season with Maserati, ultimately finishing second behind Ascari and Ferrari. Fangio switched from Maserati to Mercedes during the 1954 campaign, claiming his second title with the German outfit. He would cruise to his third the following year ahead of teammate Stirling Moss, and win his fourth with Ferrari after Mercedes withdrew from all motorsports at the end of 1955.

Fangio won his fifth and final title in 1957 after leaving Ferrari, who failed to win a race that season, for Maserati at the age of 46. He participated in three rounds in 1958 before retiring.
