F1 CEO signals desire for significant weekend changes

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali wants the drivers to have "something to fight for" every time they are in circuit.

The 59-year-old has questioned how much spectators want to see practice, asking whether preparing for qualifying and the race was "good entertainment" for fans.

“Is it a good entertainment for people coming already on a Friday to see cars going around the track just to prepare better for qualifying and the race?” the former Ferrari team principal asked Motorsport.com. “Is that what people want to see?"

For Domenicali, the aim for F1 to have some degree of competition in each session. It is not clear exactly how he would want to achieve this goal, but the implication is that points would be available during practice sessions

In reality, this would likely mean changes to practice, and perhaps a reduction in the number of practice sessions over a weekend.

The Italian is keen on at least eight sprint weekends over the course of the 24-grand prix calendar, so any such change would effect the majority of events.

“There is a huge investment [by teams] in simulation tools to do that. So my dream will be: every time that you go on the track, there is something to fight for," Domenicali said.

"That's the nature of racing. That's the nature of the drivers, because they want to be the first every time, and that's why we should be aiming for this kind of objective in the future."
