Formula 1 plans to group races together by region in the future to improve its carbon footprint and sustainability credentials. The plans would see many of the races grouped together be region, but organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix say it is unlikely they will change their event date. The Canadian GP's Chief Executive Officer, Francois Dumontier, admitted the event is limited by its options to move the race date due to the climate in the region. "We can hardly imagine a presentation [race] before the beginning of June," he admitted when talking to La Presse . He added: “It is mainly the weather [which is] the major sticking point in our talks." The race was recently called into question after wildfires started to increase in the Quebec region, leading to several areas being affected by orange smog and poor air quality including New York City.
Autumn date ruled out
June is when average temperatures reach around 24 degrees centigrade in Montreal, the highest being in July which is around 28 degrees. While temperatures stay relatively high through to September, Dumontier has ruled out the possibility of there being an Autumn date due to clashed with other state events. “It takes time to put everything in place and in doing so, we risk disrupting the activities of Jean-Drapeau Park," he added. "In addition, in the fall, we could also find ourselves in conflict with congresses, for example."
