Buemi reveals 'biggest thing' behind possible Formula E exit

Sebastien Buemi is one of several Formula E veterans speculated with a potential exit from the series, but why is a departure possibly on the Envision driver's radar?

Sebastien Buemi has revealed that the "biggest thing" behind a possible exit from Formula E at the end of this season is future calendar clashes with the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The Season 2 Formula E champion has been in the all-electric series since the very beginning, but is one of several names speculated with potential departures at the conclusion of the campaign.

Throughout his career in FE, the Envision driver has also competed for Toyota in WEC – a team he has been with for 13 years.

Like last season, just one FE/WEC race clash exists on the calendar, with the Berlin E-Prix being on the same weekend as the Six Hours of São Paulo. Buemi is against calendar clashes and wants to see better scheduling.

He is in talks with Envision about next season, although has acknowledged that the Season 12 calendar is the biggest factor over whether he continues or not.

"It's difficult to predict," Buemi told RacingNews365. "Obviously, I've been in WEC for a long time, I've been here for a long time.  I've had good seasons, bad seasons, a bit of everything over the last 11 years. Hard to say.

"Everything is fully open right now, we are in open discussions with the team. So only thing I can actually do now is make sure I give my very best and focus on one race at a time, and also enjoy it, I think that's very important.

"I've got to a stage of my career that I feel like, obviously, I'm competitive, I want to do well, but I want to enjoy what I do. So let's see.

"Everything's still fully open, but it will depend on many different aspects, including calendar clashes and how the championship will evolve. But I think the biggest thing would be the calendar."

Decision deadline

Quitting WEC to remain in FE should clashes exist on the latter's calendar for the 2025/26 season is completely off the table for Buemi, who is committed to the endurance series.

The provisional FE calendar will become known in just over a month, with it set to be submitted to the FIA for approval in May.

For Buemi, whilst he has not set himself a deadline to decide, he recognised that the publication of the new calendar offers a natural timeline.

"No, because I think my future is already quite clear," added Buemi. "With WEC, I'm going to continue in WEC 100% and then it's just about trying to see whether we have [calendar] clashes or not, how it evolves.

"So the core of my future is kind of decided now, it just depends on how things will evolve. Will there be an incentive for the championship to avoid clashes or not? I don't know how many more races I want to do here.

"For people saying, maybe less double headers, more single headers, more events, with me this makes it more difficult. I don't know.

"So right now, let's take one race at a time. I guess around May, June, at some point, we'll know the calendars, and then I guess we will see."
