Why Leclerc is confident that Ferrari can improve after mistakes

Charles Leclerc has seen his deficit to Max Verstappen in the World Championship extend to 80 points after a series of difficult races. The Monegasque believes that Ferrari have the ability to recover, though.

Charles Leclerc has revealed what gives him confidence that Ferrari can improve after mistakes in recent races. Max Verstappen's advantage over Leclerc in the World Championship currently stands at 80 points, while Red Bull have built a gap of nearly 100 points to Ferrari in the Constructors'. Leclerc has twice made an error during a race – including his crash out of the lead of the French Grand Prix – while strategy errors from the Scuderia have resulted in him falling down the order on other occasions. This was the case last time out in Hungary, where the decision to pit Leclerc for Hard tyres on his second stint cost him, pushing him down to P6 by the end of the race.

Leclerc acknowledges that Ferrari have "work to do"

Leclerc says that he and the team work hard to understand when things have gone wrong, and he admits that they still have a lot of progress to make. "Let's say that we know we need to work on that," Leclerc told the BBC . "We want to do absolutely everything to get better in every single thing we do, and obviously looking at the first part of this season, there have been some strategy problems, there have been some reliability problems and there have been driving mistakes. "On reliability and strategy, we are working extremely hard to get better. "And after a mistake, we always go through exactly the same process, which is to try and analyse from where the mistakes come, why did we take the wrong decision at a certain point of the race, in order to go forwards. "As soon as we understand a mistake, then we can move on."

Leclerc "confident" Ferrari can overcome weaknesses

According to Leclerc, he and teammate Carlos Sainz are "very involved" with the discussions, and the Monegasque has "the confidence that we will get better". When asked what gives him this confidence, Leclerc explained: "The way that we work, because I know how tough it's been the last few years to get back to where we are. "And I know that we arrived to that level because for two years we have been working on those weaknesses of the car. "So, we still have weaknesses and we need to work on them. But if we work as well as we did in the last two years on other weaknesses, I am confident we will overcome them."
