The format change Bottas feels would drastically aid F1's sustainability push

Valtteri Bottas believes a change to one-lap qualifying could help Formula 1's sustainability push by cutting its tyre usage.

F1 is committed to becoming net zero by 2030, with tyre supplier Pirelli coming up with an Alternative Tyre Allocation which was trialed in 2023 that cut the number of tyre sets available to each driver from 13 to 11 over a Grand Prix weekend.

The hope was that it could save over 4,000 tyres needing to be produced, transported and then destroyed around the world over a season, but the F1 Commission agreed to shelve the plan after it was used in Hungary and Italy in on-track tracks.

Despite this, Bottas feels a shake-up to qualifying could aid F1's push, with drivers using potentially up to five sets of tyres in a qualifying session should they make it to Q3.

Bottas's change

"Some of the things have been addressed for the next generation of cars, and I believe they should be a bit lighter, that's naturally going to go to improve racing," Bottas told media including RacingNews365 when asked for an area he would like to see F1 change immediately.

"I still think with the format, especially on the Sprint weekend there's work to do.

"I always keep saying single lap qualifying would be exciting so that you would synchronise that, yeah, that's one by one, people could follow each car.

"Imagine the amount of tyres we would save? We are using so many tyres in the weekend and if we want to be more sustainable as a sport, I think that's one argument."

Carlos Sainz also waded in on changes he would like to see, signalling the cars and tracks themselves as key areas.

"The raceability of the cars has been improved and we need to keep working on that direction, make them maybe a bit narrower, bit lighter and keep the aero under control so we don't suffer too much when we're behind each other," the Ferrari driver said.

"I think the circuits can make a bit of an effort too. I think when we go to circuits like São Paulo, and Austin, there are circuits that are just simply a lot better for overtaking than others. And I think there can be made a bit of an effort in other track designs, future track designs or even designs that are already made.

"I think Formula 1 is in a very good moment right now."
