Oliver Solberg received a five-minute time penalty during the WRC season-opening Monte Carlo Rally after he was caught out by a clip shared on social media.
The Rally2 driver was captured drifting through Monaco's Fairmont chicane - part of the F1 circuit - between the event's final podium and parc fermé, alerting the FIA to the incident.
With the stewards taking a dim view of his "exhibition driving", the Swedish driver was handed down the hefty punishment on his first weekend racing in a Toyota GR Yaris.
Solberg maintained he did not create an unsafe situation in his opinion - despite fans within touching distance of the car as he drifted - but, nevertheless, apologised for his lapse in judgement.
He, along with co-driver Elliott Edmondson, had finished sixth in class and P13 overall before the penalty was applied.
Thankfully for the son of 2003 WRC champion Petter, the Monte Carlo Rally is not a registered event in WRC2, so will have little consequence.
