Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso achieved a rare piece of F1 perfection in 2025 - out-qualifying their team-mate for every grand prix.

A whitewash in qualifying is extremely rare, with Verstappen achieving it for the second time alongside Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, having beaten Alex Albon 17-0 in 2020.

For Alonso, it is remarkably the third time he has whitewashed the sister car in grand prix qualifying, doing so against Nelson Piquet Jr in 2008, Stoffel Vandoorne in 2018 and against Lance Stroll this season.

He was last out-qualified for a grand prix by Stroll at the 2024 British GP, 36 races ago, whilst Sergio Perez was the last to defeat Verstappen at the 2024 Azerbaijan GP, 31 races ago.

Below in the table, RacingNews365 has calculated the overall head-to-head scores, the average time difference between all pairs of team-mates and the average position each driver started the main grand prix.

To calculate the figures used, the qualifying segment in which both drivers set a time is used. For example, if one driver makes Q3 but the other fell in Q2, then the times from Q2 are used for the data for the average time difference and so on if one made Q2 but the other fell in Q1.

For grid positions, the number is taken from the final starting spot as confirmed by the FIA after any grid penalties moved the positions around, with pit-lane starts counted as P20.

In the second table below, the figures for Sprint qualifying are recorded, with Alonso and Verstappen both losing their perfection...

Sprint qualifying head-to-heads

Both Alonso and Verstappen were each out-qualified once by Stroll and Tsunoda in one Sprint qualifying session.

For Stroll, this came in China where he bested Alonso by 0.073s and for Verstappen, he fell at the final hurdle, being defeated by just 0.009s by Tsunoda in the Qatar Sprint.

As above, we have calculated the head-to-head scores, average time difference and grid slots for every pair of team-mates in the season, using the same criteria as for main grands prix.
