Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has admitted that he is unsure that Fernnado Alonso could still be racing when the new race in Madrid takes place in 2026.

Following the announcement that a Grand Prix will be heading to a hybrid circuit in the destination city, Domenicali admitted that it might be "a challenge for Fernando" if he manages to stay on the grid.

Alonso will be 45 years-old when the race in Madrid happens, and currently could clintch the record for longest gap between two races wins if he ends up on the top step of the podium once more.

Domanicali later joked when speaking to AS: "Do you imagine Fernando winning in Madrid? I can only think that that can happen here in Madrid."

Alonso: I will watch on TV if I'm not here

One of the key selling points of the Madrid race has been the increased popularity of F1 in Spain, brought on by the on track performances of Carlos Sainz and Alonso.

For his part, Alonso said he would be happy to race in Madrid if he is still on the grid when the race happens.

“I will be happy to race in Barcelona, I will be happy to race in Madrid – if I’m here in 2026. If I’m not here, I will watch on TV and it doesn’t change much," he told media, including RacingNews365.
