Helmut Marko has called for changes to be made in regards to track limits after numerous penalties were handed out at the Austrian Grand Prix. There has been much debate over the issue since the race, during which 43 separate track limits violations and several time penalties were issued. One of those to be affected was Sergio Perez, who was penalised after qualifying for exceeding track limits in Q2, which resulted in his best time from Q2 being deleted along with all of his laps in Q3. This dropped him from fourth to 13th on the grid for Saturday's Sprint. Following the event, several drivers have expressed frustration over how track limits were managed in Austria, with the likes of Lando Norris suggesting that the FIA were "a bit stupid" with some of their rulings.
Marko: We need other solutions
Red Bull advisor Marko was also left unhappy about the situation, and has suggested that fresh solutions for the problem need to be found. "These offences simply cannot be measured exactly," Marko told Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung . "You could see that also in how late the penalty for Checo came after qualifying. "We need other solutions, whether it's the gravel or something else. We have to find the right compromises, with a sense of proportion. "It can't go on like this."
No criticism of race control from Marko
Marko has clarified that his comments are not a criticism of F1's Race Directors, Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas. Instead, he believes that there is not the right equipment available in determining whether a track limits violation has been committed or not. "There is simply a lack of precise technical tools to be able to determine exactly and immediately whether there is an offence or not," Marko explained.
