Liam Lawson has released an emotional statement following his axe from the Red Bull team.

Lawson joined the Milton Keynes-based squad at the start of the campaign as a replacement for Sergio Perez.

However, the New Zealander struggled immensely across the opening two rounds in Australia and China, qualifying at the back of the grid and struggling to make progress in the races.

It was reported after the Chinese Grand Prix that Red Bull was considering promoting Yuki Tsunoda in place of Lawson.

The news was officially communicated by Red Bull on Thursday, with Tsunoda now partnering Max Verstappen at the team.

Lawson has returned to Racing Bulls for the upcoming race event in Japan next weekend.

Taking to social media, Lawson thanked those who have supported him through his career and the ongoing difficult period.

“Being a Red Bull driver has been my dream since I was a kid, it’s what I’ve worked towards my whole life,” Lawson wrote in a statement.

“It’s tough, but I'm grateful for everything that’s brought me to this point. To every one of you who’s stood by me, thank you for all the support it means the world.

“Thank you Racing Bulls for the warm welcome, I’m excited and ready to go to work at one of my favourite places.”
