Lando Norris cautions McLaren despite stunning Australia pole

Lando Norris has cautioned his McLaren team about getting ahead of itself despite his stunning Australian Grand Prix pole position.

Norris had his first lap in Q3 scrubbed for a track limits violation at Turn 4, and was left facing the 1:15.180 Piastri had set. 

The Briton managed to shave 0.084s off that time to post a 1:15.096 to grab a 10th career pole and first-ever front-row start in Melbourne.

It is also McLaren's 12th season-opening pole position, drawing it level with Ferrari's all-time record as it claimed its first P1 start at the opener since Lewis Hamilton in 2012. 

"It is a perfect way to start the year, and a big congratulations to the team, everyone has done an amazing job to continue where we were from the end of last season to start with a one-two.

"It is going to be a tricky race but it was a perfect way to start.

"The car is extremely quick and when you put it together, it is unbelievable, but it is difficult to put it together, so there was a little fight between me and Oscar and it was tough, especially with my first lap where I went off and got track limits.

"Then I knew the second lap put me in a tough position, you need to take a lot or risk, but you also need to make sure you get a clean lap and don't make any mistakes.

"It is a difficult mindset to get into, but I pulled it off, so I am happy. 

"I am never going to get ahead of myself but I'm confident that the cars are in an excellent great position, but we know how quick Max is and Red Bull are in the rain, so let's wait and see."
