Hamilton reportedly wants Verstappen veto clause for new deal

Mercedes and Sir Lewis Hamilton are reportedly close to finally signing a long-awaited new deal which is rumoured to include a clause allowing the world champion veto rights over his teammate.

The saga over Hamilton’s contract has run throughout the winter as numerous reports have emerged that the world champion was seeking a multi-year deal which also included 10% of the team’s income as part of his compensation. The contract is purported to be a one-year deal with an option for a second season, with an estimated salary of €40 million and an additional clause which gives Hamilton two advertising spaces on his helmet and overalls which he himself can market, according to F1-insider.com However, there is also another clause under discussion which would grant Hamilton a veto right over the other driver in the Mercedes paddock, a move which many interpret as directed at Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The saga over Hamilton’s contract has run throughout the winter as numerous reports have emerged that the world champion was seeking a multi-year deal which also included 10% of the team’s income as part of his compensation. Both Mercedes and Hamilton have refused to comment on the speculation and have instead repeatedly stated that both parties are relaxed about reaching an agreement before the start of the season and the delays are primarily due to logistical difficulties brought about by the pandemic.
