Sainz and Hamilton escape Qatar grid penalties

Both Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton have avoided Qatar Grand Prix grid penalties after qualifying investigations.

Sainz was called for alleged erratic driving on Max Verstappen in Q2 at Lusail, while Hamilton was the only one of four drivers to be formally investigated for failing to follow the race director's 1:46.000 minimum lap-time in Q1.

Sainz was issued a reprimand as the stewards found that the Ferrari was on a cool-lap with Verstappen on an out-lap, but the Spanish driver was keen not to lose another position on track.

Sainz stated that he "could not afford" to be overtaken by the Red Bull and so tried to hold his position. The stewards felt that Sainz's actions were "unnecessary" as cars are not meant to race each other in qualifying.

However, a warning was deemed appropriate sanction, meaning he will line-up for the Grand Prix in 12th place.

As for Hamilton, he also escaped a penalty after the stewards found that he and the other drivers concerned - Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda - all took "appropriate action" to avoid other cars was the reason they went over the time.

Hamilton keeps his P3 slot on the grid, behind Verstappen and George Russell with Fernando Alonso fourth.
