Damon Hill believes Lando Norris can use his level of "dissatisfaction" to his benefit, arguing the McLaren driver has "the ingredients" to be an F1 champion.

The 24-year-old trails Max Verstappen by 52 points with six rounds of the 2024 season to run, but Hill feels the fact he is not happy with second place holds him in good stead for the future.

Norris is known to often be pessimistic and overtly critical of his performance, for which he has come under scrutiny.

However, Hill, the 1996 drivers' champion, sees it as a positive that will make him push on during his career.

“I think he's got the ingredients,” the 64-year-old told the F1 Explains podcast. “I think he's got the qualities.

"I think he's got that dissatisfaction with second place. I saw some comments he made over the summer break when he said he wasn’t good enough in the early part of this season.

“That's the sign of someone who's going to put himself to the test. He’s not going to be comfortable just being good enough. He wants to be the best.”

'Give Oscar a few more seasons...'

Despite the strong form Norris has displayed this term, as McLaren has chartered a course to have the best car in F1 for this year, it has been argued by some that his less-experienced team-mate is already better.

Oscar Piastri is a year and a half younger than the British driver and has four fewer seasons of experience in F1.

The Australian has undoubtedly impressed this term, as he did during his debut campaign, but Hill feels the 23-year-old still has a way to go to match Norris' current level.

“Give Oscar a few more seasons, as many seasons as Lando has had, and he'll have learned so much more," he wagered.

“He’ll look back at his performances now and realise he didn’t have the ingredients he needs yet.

"He's still learning. He's got the talent, definitely, and he's got the determination. I'm very impressed with Oscar."
