Oscar Piastri had a series of solid races in the F1 season of 2023. He scored many points for the team, stood on the podium twice, and even won the sprint race in Qatar. The Australian had an excellent rookie year, leading to a contract extension until 2026. Can Piastri compete for the world title in 2024?

Oscar Piastri started his ascent up the motorsport ladder by competing in karting in Australia before participating in the European championships.

Like other Australian drivers before him, Piastri relocated to Europe as a teenager in the pursuit of his motorsport dream. He based himself in the United Kingdom and went on to make his single-seater debut in the Formula 4 UAE Championship.

He progressed to British F4 and then made the step up to the Formula Renault Eurocup, where his ascent became even more rapid. After finishing his debut season in ninth, the youngster claimed the championship in the 2019 campaign following a series of wins.

Piastri Formula 2 champion

Piastri went on to compete in Formula 3 in 2020 and clinched the title after a closely-fought battle. More success followed in 2021 as he moved up to Formula 2 and became champion in his debut season, following in the footsteps of the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Having been left without a race seat in 2022, Piastri acted as a reserve driver for the Alpine F1 team before hitting the headlines in the summer when a dispute arose over his services for the 2023 season.

Oscar Piastri will drive for Mclaren in 2023

Alpine had announced Piastri as part of their driver line-up, but Piastri stated via social media that he had not agreed to race for the team.

It quickly became clear why: Piastri already had a contract with McLaren, where he would replace Daniel Ricciardo from 2023. He had an outstanding rookie year and scored crucial points for the team. As a result, his contract was extended until 2026. Piastri and Lando Norris are now the permanent driver duo for the British team until at least 2025.
