Lewis Hamilton sparks track fire in Austrian GP qualifying

A grass fire by the side of the Red Bull Ring circuit has caused a red flag during Q2 in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton has caused a red flag during the second part of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

The clock was stopped with 5:42 left to run in Q2 at the Red Bull Ring after the Ferrari driver went over the grass on the edge of the Turn 10 (final corner) exit.

Doing so instigated a small fire, with the titanium skid block underneath his SF-25 igniting the flames.

It is for this reason that the FIA opted to test using steel skid blocks at the Spanish Grand Prix. However, the motorsport governing body decided against rolling out the change.

The session resumed at 16:47 local time.
