Breaking: Lawson unveiled at RB after Ricciardo axe

The 22-year-old New Zealander has been given his big break in F1 - just as Helmut Marko said he would.

Liam Lawson will replace Daniel Ricciardo in the RB F1 team for the remainder of the season.

It was recently announced via social media that Ricciardo's comeback in F1 was over after being axed by RB.

It has now been unsurprisingly confirmed Lawson will step in for the Australian for the final six grands prix, and three sprints, that conclude F1's record-breaking 24-race calendar.

Lawson had been linked with a drive at RB for some time following his strong run of performances last year when he substituted for an injured Ricciardo at the Red Bull sister team, then known as AlphaTauri.

As Red Bull had a September deadline to exercise an option on Lawson's contract or risk losing him to a rival squad on the grid, it has opted to place its faith in the 22-year-old New Zealander.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Liam," explained team principal Laurent Mekies.

"He already knows the team well. He drove for us last season, and coped well under difficult circumstances, so it’ll be a natural transition.

"It’s great to see young talent from within the Red Bull family make the next step.

"We’re looking forward to getting our heads down and focusing on the rest of the season together."
