Andretti has confirmed the signing of Formula 1's former chief technical officer Pat Symonds, whose departure from the parent organisation was revealed earlier today.

He will join Andretti at its new Silverstone base as an executive engineering consultant, following a period of gardening leave.

Despite approaching his 71st birthday, Symonds will join Andretti after seven years of working for F1. Symonds joined F1 in 2017 following stints with Virgin and Williams.

His grand prix career started at Toleman which later became Benetton. Symonds played a key role in Michael Schumacher's two championships with the team in 1994 and 1995.

Famously, Symonds left Renault after the Enstone-based outfit's actions in the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix was discovered, otherwise known as 'Crashgate'.

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Pat to the Andretti family,” said Andretti Global Chairman & CEO Michael Andretti.

“Pat’s keen understanding of aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and Formula One power units will be instrumental as we continue to build a competitive team.

"I believe his expertise has been pivotal in shaping the narrative of Formula One and his vote of confidence in joining our effort speaks volumes. I’m really happy with this next step as our work continues at pace.”

Andretti pushing on

Andretti's acquirement of Symonds' service is its latest step to convincing F1 to let them enter the 2026 season.

Earlier this year, the FIA granted Andretti permission to join the sport as an 11th team, only for F1 – who have the final say – to reject the all-American team.

The US outfit has been pushing ahead with its plans despite its refusal from F1 and formally opened a new Silverstone base earlier this year.

Andretti has also received support from US Congress members, who have questioned F1's motives behind its rejection from the grid.

Andretti's technical director Nick Chester has already worked with Symonds in the past at Renault, and recognises the expertise the F1 veteran will bring.

“I have had the pleasure to work with Pat in the past and he has a wealth of knowledge we can draw upon,” said Chester.

“Pat will bring expertise across technical areas and team operations in his role as Executive Engineering Consultant that will help us develop the team.”
