McLaren highlights 'proper safety' issue after Las Vegas GP start chaos

McLaren boss Andrea Stella expects discussions to be held by the FIA and Formula 1 after oil was dropped on the Las Vegas Grand Prix by a parade lap car - believing it to be a "proper safety issue" after the Turn 1 chaos.

During the traditional pre-race show, Lewis Hamilton's car dropped oil over the left-hand side of the grid, meaning speedy dry cement was put down, but it did have an impact on the grid-slots of Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly in second and fourth.

The two were unhappy at the incident, with Carlos Sainz believing that his Turn 1 incident, where he tagged Hamilton, was caused by dirty tyres from running over the cement, with Stella expecting talks to be on the agenda over avoiding a repeat.

Stella identifies safety concern

"It seems like an obvious point," Stella explained to media including RacingNews365.

"There is a Formula 1 race, then you would not like to drop oil on track one-and-a-half hours before the race

"There are many things that will populate the agenda of F1 and the FIA to improve safety conditions, and in this case, it wasn't the oil on the grid, that wasn't necessarily safety, but it could have been a catalyst or a disadvantage."

Stella was then informed of Sainz's comments about how the Turn 1 incident was caused by having the low grip conditions, with the Italian believing this then constituted a safety concern.

"Then it becomes a proper safety issue, and it is all things that shouldn't happen and should be fixed as a priority."
