A fan has been banned by Formula 1 for life after starting a fight in the grandstands during the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Footage on social media appears to show a fan in the Foro Sol Stadium punching another spectator, before being wrestled back by other members of the crowd.

He was eventually escorted out of the stands by security.

F1 has taken swift action and banned the fan from attending races permanently.

"It was an isolated incident which was dealt with quickly and the individual in question was removed and banned for life," an F1 spokesperson confirmed to RacingNews365.

Verstappen calls for more "respect" among fans

After the Austrian Grand Prix earlier this season, F1 issued a statement after some fans were subject to harassment at the Red Bull Ring, with World Champion Max Verstappen also calling for fans to improve their behaviour at races.

He also called for them to show more "respect" for competitors, after he was booed by a number of fans on the podium at the US GP.

This did not stop fans from doing the same to Charles Leclerc, following his opening lap crash with home favourite Sergio Perez which forced him to retire.

The FIA has utilised AI technology to help stamp out abusive comments on social media, after President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said F1 could soon be "beyond repair" if it does not adequately tackle online abuse.
