Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has insisted that Max Verstappen "no longer needs anyone", stressing that his departure will not impact the Dutchman.
It was announced on Tuesday, following the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP, that Marko would leave Red Bull after over 20 years with the Milton Keynes-based outfit.
At 82 years old, Marko has seen it all in the F1 paddock, although he insists he still has the energy to continue if he decided to.
Marko had planned to call it a day if Verstappen won a record-equalling fifth consecutive drivers' title, but decided it was still best to leave despite the 28-year-old losing out to Lando Norris.
"Energy I still have, but that's not what this is about," Marko told oe24. "It's about not losing enthusiasm and passion in this work. That's how I planned it in case we did win the title.
"After we didn't win, I came to the opposite conclusion: that it should actually apply just as well now. At some point, you have to know when it's time. In the end, I carried the responsibility."
Marko and Verstappen's relationship was one of incredible strength; however, the four-time world champion was unable to attend a planned meal with the Austrian.
"Due to flight problems, Max could not come to the planned dinner," revealed Marko. "But there will be a meeting soon. Whether that will be possible before Christmas, I cannot say."
Since he first stepped into the F1 paddock, Verstappen has found Marko constantly in his corner and by his side.
It became a formidable duo, although Marko is aware that the Red Bull star driver no longer needs him.
"Different circumstances call for different reactions. No one here has parted with arguments. Max is now more than a grown man; he no longer needs anyone to explain anything to him. Max is perfect — he doesn't need anyone anymore."
