Wolff names driver he thinks 'deserves' future Red Bull seat

While Toto Wolff would not usually focus on the driver line-up of Red Bull, the Mercedes boss admits that he hopes one driver in particular may one day get a chance with the Milton Keynes-based squad.

Toto Wolff hopes that Nyck de Vries will be successful enough at AlphaTauri to earn a promotion to the main Red Bull team in the future. De Vries acted a reserve driver for Mercedes before being handed an opportunity to join the F1 grid in 2023 with the AlphaTauri outfit, having impressed many after making a substitute appearance for an unwell Alex Albon at Williams during the 2022 Italian Grand Prix weekend. The Dutchman will now become a part of the Red Bull stable, after being given a memorable send-off by the Silver Arrows at the season-closing race in Abu Dhabi.

Would Wolff have de Vries back at Mercedes?

When asked if he would be willing to accept de Vries back into the Mercedes fold should things not work out with AlphaTauri, Wolff told Poland's Swiatwyscigow : "I thought about it. "I hope that he stays there, and I hope that he's successful in AlphaTauri. "I hope he will be so good to make it into a Red Bull seat one day, because he deserves that." Wolff also hopes that this could result in de Vries being able to battle against his old team. "Then we take it like sportsmen, and we fight it out," the team boss added.
