Ricciardo: When it's low it's really low

Australian Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo believes he could have finished sixth at the Styrian Grand Prix were it not for an engine issue.

McLaren F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo laments a lost opportunity at the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix, with the Australian believing he could have finished sixth were it not for a mechanical issue. After a great start that saw Ricciardo leapfrog into the top 10, the Australian began to drop back after experiencing a loss in power. While he was ultimately able to resolve the issue, the damage had been done to the McLaren driver's race. "When it's low, it's really low in this sport," Ricciardo told RacingNews365.com along with other select members of the media. "Obviously [we were] on a preferred strategy with a medium, so I felt like the cars ahead would have struggled on the soft and we were in a really good position. "We were ahead of Sainz, same strategy. He finished six, I really think that that was us today, I think we could have been fifth and sixth again, as a team. Ricciardo also explained what occurred during his frantic first lap. "Yeah, lost power," Ricciardo stated. "I think I felt it out of turn one. I got some switches and was able to recover it by around turn seven or turn eight. But everyone I passed on lap one waved past me then you're in the train and that's it, the afternoon's done." Ricciardo is currently ninth in the 2021 Drivers' Championship.
