With the exception of the addition of the bonus point for fastest lap in 2019, Formula 1's points system has remained unchanged since 2010.
The now familiar 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 system was introduced, awarding points to the top 10 finishers, as opposed to the top eight of the previous system, itself first introduced in 2003.
Before that, at the turn of the century, only the top six were rewarded with any points!
The increase of the prizes on offer has become topical in recent times as the big five teams - Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin can usually be considered to lock-out the points positions if all goes to plan in a grand prix.
That leaves RB, Haas, Williams, Alpine and Stake to fight over the crumbs and hope for one of the top drivers to suffer a mechanical gremlin or crash to bring home a point or two.
F1 is now considering a tweak to the structure to award points down to 12th place, meaning Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon would have walked away with something to show for their Chinese GPs, if the idea was in practice last weekend in Shanghai.
