Biography Jan Lammers

Johannes Antonius Lammers was born on 2 June 1956 in Zandvoort, The Netherlands. As a part-time job, 'Jantje' washed cars at Rob Slotemaker's anti-slip school. Slotemakers' anti-skid school is located nearby the famous Circuit Zandvoort.

Slotemaker encourages Lammers to explain to clients of the anti-skid school how to skid cars safely. It soon emerges that Jan is talented at keeping a car under control. Slotemaker signs Lammers up for a touring car championship. At 16, Lammers wins his first race and immediately takes the title. This makes Lammers the youngest ever touring car champion in the Netherlands.

In 1976, the Dutchman enters Formula Ford. During his first race, he qualifies on pole position. During the season, Lammers proves several times that he was made for motorsport. As a result, Lammers forces a seat within Formula 3 in 1977.

Formula 3

Lammers has a rough first year in Formula 3. His Hawke car is no match for the Marches and Ralts. In 1978, he transferres to Racing Team Holland led by Alan Docking, where he has Dutch teammates Arie Luyendyk and Huub Rothengatter by his side. In the same year, Lammers wins the European Formula 3 championship. That year, he leaves behind well-known drivers such as Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost, among others.

In 1979, Lammers receives an offer from the March Formula 2 team. 'Jantje' rejects the offer and immediately makes the switch to Formula 1. He signs with the Shadow F1 Team. The Shadow turns out to be a car that is far from competitive. The team is in dire financial straits. After one season, Lammers leaves and joins the ATS team.

Things do not go smoothly for the Zandvoort driver at ATS either. While teammate Marc Surer races with the new ATS D4, Lammers has to make do with the D3 from the previous year. When Surer is out of action for a while due to an accident, Lammers gets the D4. In this car, Lammers is immediately faster, but points elude him. A highlight is the race weekend in Long Beach, where Lammers qualifies fourth. However, due to malfunctions with his ATS, he has to retire in the opening lap.

After a stint with Ensign, Lammers returns to ATS in 1981. He is close to a contract with the Brabham team, but team boss Bernie Ecclestone prefers Mexican driver Hector Rebaque over the Dutchman. This is because Rebaque brings a large sum of money. Former ABBA drummer Slim Borgudd signs with ATS during 1981. Once again, money takes priority over Lammers' qualities, so the Dutch driver goes looking for a new employer.

In 1982, Lammers signs with the Theodore Formula 1 Team. This team also has a limited budget, which means Lammers cannot make much of an impact. Despite this, his talent is recognized in and around the paddock. When Gilles Villeneuve suddenly dies during the Zolder Grand Prix, Ferrari approaches Lammers for a seat at the Italian racing team. The idea is for Lammers to replace Villeneuve from the Zandvoort Grand Prix onwards. Just before the Dutch GP, Lammers breaks his thumb. Ferrari sidelines Lammers and signs Frenchman Patrick Tambay instead. In the course of 1982, Lammers packs his bags and swaps Formula 1 for sports car racing.

For decades, Lammers appeared in sports car races. This began with a contract at Richard Llyord Racing in 1983. Together with Jonathan Palmer, Keke Rosberg, and Thierry Boutsen, he achieved several podium finishes. In the following years, Lammers proved himself to be a solid driver. He achieved various victories and podium finishes. He also made his debut in the IndyCar Series in 1985, as well as a comeback in Formula 3. In addition, he stepped into touring cars several times and competed in other racing classes.

In 1988, Lammers won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1992, the Zandvoort driver briefly returned to Formula 1. He was able to drive for March during the last two races of the season, ten years after his last race in Formula 1. This long period made Lammers record holder. In 1993, Lammers aimed for a seat at March again, but the team's bankruptcy threw a wrench in the works. Lammers returned to sports car racing. He raced in both GT's and prototypes. In addition, he ran the Racing For Holland team for several years. From 2010 to 2014, he participated in the famous Dakar Rally. In 2019, Lammers made his final appearance at a major motorsport event. Together with Giedo van der Garde and Frits van Eerd, he once again competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Jan Lammers as team boss

During his career, Jan Lammers was also team boss of his own racing team three times. This began with Vitaal Racing in the Opel Lotus Euroseries in 1989. Around the turn of the century, Lammers founded the Racing For Holland team, with which he won several titles in the FIA Sportscar Championship. From 2005 to 2009, Lammers was team boss of Team Netherlands in the A1GP.

Since 2019, Jan Lammers has taken on the role of sporting director at the organization of the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix.

Since 2001, Lammers has been in a relationship with Mariska Hoyinck. Earlier, 'Jantje' was married to Fardous Hashem. The couple has two children: Sumaya and Rayan.

With Mariska Hoyinck, Jan Lammers had a son in 2008: René Lammers. In the meantime, father Jan is preparing son René for Formula 1. René Lammers is currently competing in the WSK Super Master Series kart championship.

Not only as the sporting director of the Dutch Grand Prix is Jan Lammers a popular figure. The former F1 driver is regularly seen on various Dutch TV shows such as Ziggo Sport Racecafé, NOS Studio Sport, and RTL GP Magazine.
