Biography Giedo van der Garde

Giedo van der Garde was born on April 25, 1985 in Rhenen, The Netherlands. At a young age, he started karting. He took several prizes, culminating in a world title. Thanks to his good results, he was accepted into the Renault Driver Development program. Jos Verstappen was Van der Garde's mentor. Van der Garde even lived with Verstappen for a time.

In 2003, Van der Garde made his debut in motorsports. He competed for the Van Amersfoort Racing team in Fomule Renault. From 2004 through 2006, the man from Rhenen drove in the Formula 3 Euroseries. His results were very variable. An iconic moment is the Formula 3 Euroseries race at the Zandvoort circuit in 2005, where Van der Garde shared the podium with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton won, Vettel finished second and Van der Garde crossed the finish line in third place.

Giedo van der Garde GP2 Series

From 2009 to 2012, van der Garde competed in the GP2 Series, the current Formula 2. In his debut season, he scored three victories. He was also on the podium several times in the years that followed. His last race in the class he won. This was the race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore in 2012.

Giedo van der Garde F1

In 2012, Van der Garde was not only active as a GP2 driver. He was also a test driver with the Caterham Formula 1 team that year. Previously, Van der Garde was active at Spyker and Super Aguri (2007) as a test driver. Van der Garde was also a test driver in 2008. This time at Force India. In addition, he tested once for the Renault F1 team that year. In 2010, Van der Garde was in talks with four teams to secure a seat for the 2011 season. However, this did not lead to success.

Giedo van der Garde Caterham

In February 2013, Van der Garde was announced as a regular driver for the Caterham Formula One team. His teammate was Frenchman Charles Pic. Van der Garde had a reasonable season and faced a car that was far from competitive. His highlight came during the Belgian Grand Prix, where he reached Q2 of qualifying with his Caterham. His best finish was a 14th place in Hungary.

Giedo van der Garde Sauber F1

In 2014, Van der Garde traded Caterham for Sauber, where he again became a test driver. A very conscious choice, he explained in his podcast DRS (2023). "I heard about Sauber's plans; the future of that team looked good. My goal was to spend the 2014 season from the sidelines and return to the grid in 2015," the Dutch driver said.

During the 2014 season, Sauber announced that Van der Garde would get a seat in 2015. Later, Sauber reversed this decision. The team had also contracted Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr, leading to a complex situation. This was because Van der Garde had a valid racing contract for the 2015 season. The reason Sauber contracted Nasr and Ericcson was because they allegedly brought more sponsorship money. Several lawsuits followed; Van der Garde was continually vindicated. At the very last minute, both parties settled the case for an undisclosed amount of money and Van der Garde still missed out on a drive in 2015. He left Formula 1 and withdrew from motorsports for a time.

In the period following his F1 adventure, Van der Garde focused on entrepreneurship. Over time, he returned to racing. In 2016, he became champion in the European Le Mans Series with G-Drive. He also participated several times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including with Racing Team Nederland. With that team, he became champion in the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship, along with teammates Frits van Eerd and Job van Uitert. In 2023, Van der Garde will be active in the American IMSA championship. He will race for the TDS Racing team. He is also active as an F1 analyst at ViaPlay.

Giedo van der Garde married Denise Boekhoorn, daughter of well-known Dutch entrepreneur Marcel Boekhoorn, in 2013.
