The Scotsman made his competitive racing debut in 1963 racing in Formula 3 with Tyrrell, claiming the championship in his first year of racing. After spending a few years in Formula 2 and competing in non-championship events, the ‘Flying Scot’ would make his proper Formula 1 debut in 1965 racing for the BRM Team, winning twice in three years. Stewart would become a dominant force when his former F3 team owner Ken Tyrrel decided to try his hand at Formula 1 in 1968. Between then and his eventual retirement in 1973 Stewart became the driver to beat. He won three championships in 1969, 1971, and 1973 and finished fifth and second in the intervening years.

Stewart would also go on to become an articulate spokesperson for Formula 1, in a lot of ways he became F1’s first truly global superstar. He appeared in commercials, provided the media and viewers with a detailed analysis of races, and was often spotted in the company of royals and high ranking politicians.

His true legacy however comes in the form of making significant safety improvements for his fellow drivers. Some of his contributions include championing the use of full-face helmets for drivers, petitioning for larger run-off areas and barriers as well as campaigning for a fully trained medical staff at all the circuits.

Stewart also ran his own F1 team Stewart Grand Prix, achieving moderate success with one win and three podiums before being sold to Jaguar ahead of the 2000 season.

The Scot was also knighted in 2001 for his contributions toward motorsport.
