Max Verstappen finds himself in the top 20 of Forbes 2024 highest-paid athletes list. He is the F1 driver with the biggest earnings over the previous year.

Coming in at number 17, the Dutchman's year earnings exceed the likes of NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets and Golf's Rory McIlroy, who sit just behind him.

The Red Bull driver earned $81 million over the past 12 months, with $76 million coming from his lucrative contract with the team and the other $5 million from off-track activities, such as endorsement deals.

Lewis Hamilton is close behind at 21. However, the British driver's non-F1 exploits exceed Verstappen's.

The seven-time champion took home $12 million from such earnings, with his $57 million per year Mercedes deal taking him to a total of $69 million.

Football, golf and basketball dominated the top five. Cristiano Ronaldo led the way at $260 million - $60 million of which was off-field.

LIV Golf's John Rahm was in second, ahead of Lionel Messi in third. LA Laker LeBron James was the top American in fourth, with fellow-NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo in fifth.

No other motorsport driver was placed in the top 50 list.
