Danill Kvyat is to take part in an unusual race this weekend - against an AI-powered race car at Yas Marina.

The ex-Toro Rosso, Red Bull and AlphaTauri driver will race an autonomous car developed by the Technology Innovation Institute as part of a series of races to launch the 'Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League.'

Eight teams are set to take part from countries including Germany, China, Hungary and Italy with a prize purse on offer of $2.25 million.

Each of the teams will have access to identical Dallara-built Super Formula SF23 cars, with TII developing the actual software used.

It is then up to the coders and engineers to best extract performance from the software to teach their cars how to drive the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix track.

There will be a series of pre-qualifying races, before the winner is decided in a 'overtaking contest.'

Kvyat will then race against an AI-powered machine, although it will not be in direct competition, with the TII team aiming to close as close to the lap-time the Russian can set.
